Bill Richardson Drops Out of Race

MERRIMACK, N.H. -- New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson ended his campaign for the presidency Wednesday after twin fourth-place finishes that showed his impressive credentials could not compete with his rivals' star power.

Richardson planned to announce the decision Thursday, according to two people close to the governor with knowledge of the decision. They spoke on a condition of anonymity in advance of the governor's announcement. MORE

Decision time nears for Richardson

Making it to the Final Four is a terrific accomplishment for an NCAA basketball team, but not so much for a presidential candidate.

Gov. Bill Richardson put the best spin possible on his poor performance Thursday in the Iowa caucus, claiming "We made it to the final four." While that may sound good, it ignores the fact that the top three — Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and John Edwards — collected all of the committed delegates and nearly all of the votes. Richardson tallied just 2 percent, according to The Associated Press, while Sen. Joe Biden amassed 1 percent. MORE

We have to give Bill Richardson credit for trying to make the best of a bad situation -- and attempting to expand the political vocabulary.

The traditional saying is that there are "three tickets out of Iowa" -- meaning that a presidential candidate who does not finish first, second or third in Iowa's caucuses might as well mail it in.
